Steel rebar inside concrete is safe from corrosion because the concrete is very alkaline. However, if chloride ions are present, such as from deicing salts, the chloride removes the alkalinity’s “passivating layer,” causing the steel to rust. Since rust has a higher volume than steel, it expands against the concrete, bringing it under stress and causing it to crack and pop off. Chlorides enter the concrete through cracks or by penetrating the pore structure of the concrete.
Concrete is porous, therefore if water gets in and freezes, it breaks off tiny flakes from the surface. Deicing salts exacerbate the problem. Scaling is the term for this condition, which can worsen over time. When the damage is serious, the concrete can be destroyed. Scaling is avoided with proper air entrainment.
When concrete is placed, it usually contains more moisture than the hydration reaction consumes. The concrete shrinks as the water evaporates about 0.15 inches to over 20 feet, depending on how wet the concrete is, to begin with. If you could keep a slab in the air as it shrank, it wouldn’t crack; but, since it’s on the ground, it drags on the subgrade, limiting shrinkage and causing cracks. Concrete joints monitor drying shrinkage cracks. At the very least, joints allow us to choose where the crack will appear.
Plastic shrinkage occurs when concrete is mounted on a surface that is allowed to dry out before it has gained strength, resulting in a pattern of cracks on the surface. This is often referred to as “crazing”. These cracks are usually very shallow and small, and they are rarely a serviceability issue, though they can be an eyesore for some homeowners, particularly on decorative surfaces. Proper curing is the answer, but synthetic fiber reinforcement may help to mitigate the issue.
